09/10/2003 | EDWARD J. LONGE SR. BURLINGTON Edward J. Longe Sr., 82, of Burlington died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Burlington on Aug. 30, 1921, the son of the late Louis and Elmira (Latrelle) Longe. On Jan. 15, 1943, he was married to Irene M. Trudo in Hampton, Va. She predeceased him on Sept. 24, 2002. From 1952 to 1975, Ed owned and operated Longe Brothers store in Burlington. He was a member of the Vermont Retail Grocers Association, the Knights of Columbus De Goesbriand Council 279, and Christ the King Church. He was a past member of the Christ the King School Buildings and Grounds Committee. Ed is survived by his six children, Edward J. Longe Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Grass Valley, Calif., Robert R. Longe and his wife, Angela, of Burlington, Alan R. Longe and his wife, Pamela, of Burlington, Kathleen M. Longe and her husband, Thomas McHugh, of Alburg, Douglas J. Longe and his companion, Valarie, of South Burlington, and Dean T. Longe of Burlington; 14 grandchildren, Anna, Rebecca, Eliza, Sarah, Derek, Ryan, Kyle, Alison, Chad, Josh, Mark, Betsy, Molly, and Emma; four great-grandchildren, Isaac, Justin, Jonah and Annabelle; his brother, Alfred Longe and his wife, Joyce, of Essex Junction; his sisters-in-law, Corrine Longe of Williston, and Katherine Murphy of Burlington; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Trudo of Connecticut. He was predeceased by six sisters, Marie Pasho, Dorena Strong, Florence Myette, Rita Gay, Unabelle Karnes, and Dorothy Mayo; and three brothers, Clarence, Donald and Raymond Longe. Ed will be fondly remembered for his kind-heartedness, friendliness and generosity. His sense of humor was enjoyed by everyone he met. Ed was a helpful dad and neighbor, always willing to lend a hand. He was an attentive grandfather, and was adored by his grandchildren. As owner of Longe Brothers, he helped many in need. It wasn't just a grocery store, it was a gathering place for friends and neighbors. He enjoyed playing softball, golfing, and bowling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, Burlington. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery, South Burlington. 09/12/2003 | BURLINGTON LONGE, Edward J. Sr. A largely attended Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church by the Rev. Stephen Hornat, S.S.E., assisted by Deacon Louis Meunier. The pall was placed on his casket by his children, Edward Jr., Robert, Alan, Kathleen, Douglas and Dean Longe. The crucifix was placed by his grandson Mark Bushey. The readings were proclaimed by his grandchildren Chad Longe, Rebecca Longe and Derek Longe. The offertory gifts were presented by his grandchildren Emma Longe, and Elizabeth and Molly McHugh. Words of remembrance were offered by his son, Dean Longe, daughter-inlaw Pamela Longe, granddaughters Alison Longe and Emma Longe, and grandson Josh Longe. Music was provided by Christ the King Folk Group. Present was an honor guard from Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. Attending were many relatives, friends and neighbors, representatives from City Hall of Burlington, Burlington Electric, Al Martin Volvo, Vermont Gas, Pesi-Cola, Verizon, state Legislature, Christ the King School, the University of Vermont and One Flight Up. Interment followed in Resurrection Park Cemetery with Father Hornat offering committal prayers. Bearers were his grandsons, Derek, Ryan, Kyle, Chad and Josh Long, and Mark Bushey. 09/26/2002 | IRENE M. (TRUDO) LONGE BURLINGTON Irene M. (Trudo) Longe, 80, of Burlington died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at her residence surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren. She was born in Dorchester, Mass., on Jan. 16, 1922, the daughter of the late Clayton Trudo and Mary (Norton) Trudo. She attended Beeman Academy in New Haven, where she participated in many activities including basketball, graduating in 1940. Jan. 15, 1943, she married Edward J. Longe Sr. in Hampton, Va. She was a member of Christ the King parish. She was known for her love of cooking, baking, dancing, walking ice-skating, birds and the Red Sox, and was a state champion bowler. Her greatest joy was celebrating special occasions with her children and grandchildren. Her spirit lives on in the family she cherished so much. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edward J. Sr. of Burlington; six children, Edward J Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Burlington, Robert R. and his wife, Angela, of Burlington, Alan R. and his wife, Pamela, of Burlington, Kathleen M. Longe and her husband, Thomas McHugh of Alburg, Douglas J. and his companion, Valerie, of South Burlington, and Dean T. and his companion, Adria, of Burlington; her grandchildren, Anna Rebecca, Eliza, Sarah, Derek, Ryan Kyle, Alison, Chad, Josh, Emma, Mark, Betsy and Molly; and two greatgrandchildren, Isaac and Justin; two brothers, Joseph Trudo of Connecticut and Robert Trudo of Essex Junction; a sister, Katherine Murphy of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Emma Trudo, and two brothers, Jack and Richard Trudo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. in Christ the King Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington. Roland Rivard, assisted by Deacon Louis Meunier. Granddaughters Anna and Rebecca Longe proclaimed the readings and grandson Derek Longe delivered the Prayer of the Faithful. Granddaughters Elizabeth and Madeline McHugh and Emma Longe presented offertory gifts. Christ the King Folk Group provided music. Her daughter-in-law, Pam Longe, and her granddaughter Alison Longe offered reflections. Many family and friends, including Mayor Peter Clavelle, were in attendance. Interment followed in Resurrection Park Cemetery with the Rev. Rivard offering committal prayers. Bearers were her grandsons, Derek, Ryan, Kyle, Chad and Josh Longe and Mark Bushey. Funeral arrangements were by the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, Burlington. |
